Todays motorcycles are everywhere and there are a lot of different types or kinds of bikes too. But the motorcycle, like the automobile, is a comparative newcomer to the world stage.

The very first motorcycle ever constructed was built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1885 at Bad Cannstatt in Germany. fino were really focusing more about the motor that was set up to power the two-wheeled contraption and not so much on developing a new kind of automobile, but the consequent impact on motorized travel would be tremendous. There were earlier versions of steam powered bicycles, however this is the first petroleum powered bike.

Not long then in 1894 that the very first production motorcycle went available as the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller bicycle. It wasn’t long after that before several of the bicycle companies of that time got into the action and started selling versions of what was essentially motorized bicycles. However, as horsepower increased, the engines started to outgrow the bike frames which were used as their own carriage.

The most popular motorcycle business before World War 1 was Indian motorcycle. Following the war, Harley Davidson took on the number one spot until 1928 when DKW became the major motorcycle manufacturer in the world. For a few years after World War two BSA took over as the largest motorcycle producer until 1955 when NSU Motorworks who had started out as a knitting machine company in 1884 became the dominant producer for the next few decades.

In the 1970s the Japanese companies Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Suzuki made their entry into this discipline, transformed the face of the market, and quickly became the most prominent bike providers to the planet from then on. Since the 70s Honda has held the name of the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. Today, the large four motorcycle manufacturers have penetrated practically every motorcycle marketplace in the world, and they’re highly regarded as makers of premium quality motorcycle products.

In the past few years some of those elderly motorcycle brands like the Indian have regained popularity with Harley Davidson being the most successful by far.
